William & John, Leverington to Adelaide
William Dring b. 1827 Cam. England, Occupation Labourer, and his wife Sarah, arrived at Pt. Adelaide, South Australia June 11th 1850 on the ship FATIMA
John Dring b. abt 1822 Cam. England, Occupation Agric. Labourer, with his wife Alice (nee Cox?) and son William (b.1851) arrived at Pt. Adelaide, South Australia November 2 1851 on the ship OREGON.
These two families came from Leverington in Cambridgeshire. There is a long letter from John & Alice, published in the Wisbech Advertiser for 15 July 1853 page 4, which details their progress in Australia. The introduction to the letter shows that they all came from Leverington. Checking the parish registers for Leverington CMB 1558-1800 (M to 1812) I find that there was a nest of Drings there with entries from 1682 to 1713 but none thereafter. So, our stray Drings must have moved into the parish after 1800. Could William & John be strays from the Warboys clan? Dr C M Dring
The two boys that came to Australia died very early and I will have to look up the death certificates and determine the causes. A widow married my Gr Gr Grandfather ( Bailey). I think it was John Dring's son who formed a carrying business in Adelaide and was quite successful. There is still John Dring Transport operating in Adelaide to this day. I do have some old photos but at this stage cannot determine who is who. I may be able to contact a direct line and swap some notes etc. As they were a large carrying firm I am confident that there are photographs that exist of their company and maybe their ancestors! Another son became Mayor of a Municipality in Adelaide ( Unley) in 1900.
