There were some very good performances from Hastings AC athletes competing in the London Marathon on Sunday 14 April. Alan Bontoft was the first Hastings AC athlete to cross the line clocking a very respectable 2 hours 56 minutes 13 seconds. Syd Rivers did well to finish in 4 hours 10 minutes whilst there was a great effort from Lena Harris in her first marathon and in first run above 13 miles finished the course in 5 hours 20 minutes.
Following their great success in the recent Sussex Road Relays there were some great performances once again from Hastings AC athletes in The National Young Athletes League Road Relay Championships held on Sunday 7th April at Sutton Park Birmingham. The best result came in the U17 event where were a very creditable 9th in 51.54 out of 38 teams who finished. Lee Emanuel clocked 12-24, Mark Barham 12-22, James Mountford 13-27 and Paul Wilson 13-41. Hastings AC also fielded an U13 Boys team who came 16th in 35-08, out of a total field of 46 teams. Alex Ambridge ran 8-33, David Cooper 8-42, Adam Nichols 8-44 and Oliver Sandeman-Allen 9-09. Finally the U 15 Boys finished 20th in 56-28 out of 39 teams. Gavin Bettley clocked 14-10, Stephen Jules 13-37 , Simon Baker 13-52 and Lee Jules 14-49. Overall it was a very good performance by the club against top class opposition.
Hastings AC had their best ever Sussex Road Relay Championships when they came away with 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal in the 2002 event held at Christ's Hospital Horsham on Saturday 30 March. The Junior events consisted of legs held over a distance of 1 mile 241 yards whilst the Senior events were held over legs of 2 miles 104 yards. The first gold medal came in the U13 boys event with Hastings AC coming 1st in a new course record time of 19 mins 5 secs. Alex Ambridge clocked 6-07, Adam Nichol 6-39 and David Cooper 6-09. Alex Ambridge recorded first equal fastest leg whilst David Cooper had the 3rd fastest leg. The other gold medal came in the U15 boys race where Hastings AC crossed the line 1st in 17-34, again a new course record. Gavin Bettley recorded 5-45, Simon Baker 6-01 and Stephen Jules 5-48. Gavin recorded the fastest leg whilst Stephen recorded the 2nd fastest leg. The silver medal came in the Senior Men's Race where Hastings AC had their best result for a long time coming 2nd in 63-24. Mark Barham recorded 10-14, Lee Emmanuel 10-28, Nick Lambert 10-54, Mark Vidler 10-54, Emile Tambeh 10-46 (following on from his bronze medal in the Sussex Cross Country League) and Daniel Wicks a fine last leg in 10-08. The other Hastings AC results were as follows. The Boys U15 Boys B team were 11th in 21-42, Lee Jules recorded 6-18,Callum Brady 7-46 and Sam Grain 6-38. The Senior Women's Team was 14th in 49-54. Emily Loughman recorded 13-51, Emma Churchill 19-24 and Jeannie Sanderson 16-39. The Veteran Women over 40 team was 11th in 56-59. Barbara Headley clocked 21-00, Tina Brady 19-08 and Patience Cooper 16-51. The Veteran Men over 50 team were a fine 5th in 40-01. Cass Balch ran 14-02, Reg Wild 13-42 and there was a storming last leg from Pete Standen (who is over 60) in 12-17. The senior Men's B Team was 12th in 77-30. Dale Martin clocked 11-43, Jason Johnston 13-04, Ben Corrigan 13-07,Mark Cooper 14-09, John Hammond 12-32, and Jeremy Wainwright 12-55. Finally Rebecca Bicknell Clocked 8-40 in the U15 Girls race and Harriet Loughman recorded 7-40 in the U13 Girls Race. Hastings AC did not have a completed team in these age groups.
WORTHING 20 MILE ROAD RACE 24 MARCH 2002
There were some excellent performances from Hastings AC athletes in the Worthing 20 Mile Road Race held on Sunday 24 March . Alan Bontoft ran well to finish in 2hours 7minutes, however Jeanette Hardwick really excelled to finish 2nd lady overall and 1st lady veteran in a personal best time of 2hours 21 minutes and 20 seconds.
SUSSEX SUNDAY CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE Ardingley College March 2002
There were some fine Hastings AC performances in the final Sussex Cross Country League fixture of the 2001-2002 held at Ardingly College recently. In the U13 Girls race Sophie Fitzwarren was 5th in 11-57 with Nicki Avery 19th in 14-40. Hastings AC did very well to finish 4th team overall in this age group. In the U15 Girls race Hannah Tomlinson was 19th in 18-39 and Claire Burnham was 20th in 18-43 whilst Alex Ambridge was a magnificent winner in the U13 Boys race crossing the line 1st in 13-56. Alex also took the gold medal for finishing 1st overall in the season. Again the best team performance came in the U17 boys race. Mark Barham was 1st in 17-20 with Lee Emanuel just behind in 2nd place in 17-44. James Mountford was 6th in 18-19 and Paul Wilson was 9th in 18-32. Overall in the League Lee Emanuel was 2nd, Mark Barham was 3rd and the U17 athletes combined magnificently to come 1st and take the team gold medal.

Cross-Country Championships at Nottingham 9 Feb & East Sussex Sunday Cross
Country League at Sedlescombe 10 Feb
It has been a busy weekend
for Hastings AC athletes taking part in cross country events. On Saturday 9th
February Hastings AC athletes were representing Sussex In the UK CAU Inter-Counties
Cross-Country Championships at Nottingham and there were some really good performances.
In the U13 boys event David Cooper was 78th 12-14 with Alex Ambridge just behind
in 93rd spot in 12-18. In the U17mens event Mark Barham performed well to finish
66th in 22-06 with Emile Tambeh 55th in 28-41, in the U20 men's event. On the
women`s side Emily Loughman was 112th in the U17womens race in 22-04 and Joanna
Hinde was 70th in the Senior Women's event in 31-22. On
Sunday 10th February the venue changed to Pestalozzi village near Sedlescombe
and Hastings AC were representing their club in the 5th round of the East Sussex
Sunday Cross Country League. In this race there was a great victory for Daniel
Wicks who crossed the line first in 31-52. He was closely followed by Paul Wilson
6th in 33-36 and Pete Standen 10th in 34-45 and Richard Vidler 12th in 35-26.
Dale Martin ran well to finish 13th in 35-40 with Jamie Hernon making a welcome
return to cross country running, 28th in 38-48. Jeremy Wainwright had a good
race to finish 34th in 39-29, with John Hammond not too far behind 37th in 39-49.
Further down the field Mark Cooper was 73rd in 46-32 Phil Berry 74th in 46-44
and Margaret Balch 92nd in 52-34.

Scottish
Indoor Heptathlon 9/10 February
Wayne Martin competed
in the Scottish Indoor Heptathlon at Glasgow`s Kelvin Hall on the weekend of
9/10 February and finished 5th overall with a total score of 2977 points which
ranks him 14th best ever in Great Britain. His achievements included 3 new personal
bests. In the first event 60 metres, he clocked 8.81 secs shaving 0.3 secs from
his previous best, then he put the shot 8.33 m and long jumped 4.41m. Then to
complete day one, he pole vaulted 2.50m to equal his best performance of last
season. On the 2nd day Wayne started with a personal best in the 60 metres hurdles
of 11.43 secs, 0.1 secs inside his previous best. He then high jumped 1.45m
to beat last year`s best effort and finished the day with another personal best,
this time clocking 3 minutes 22.44 secs for the 1000m 11 seconds better than
his previous best. Wayne said that he owed his great improvement in this event
to his coach Pete Evans.
Southern
Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill Fields, London 26th January
Despite the wet and
muddy conditions there were some good performances from Hastings AC athletes
in the recent Southern Cross Country Championships held at Parliament Hill Fields
London. In the U13 girls race Tracy Fitzwarren was 77th and Lucy Baker
was 117th whilst in the U13 boys Alex Ambridge did well to finish 33rd
in 14-24 with David Cooper 50th in 14-40 and Oliver Sandeman-Allen
102nd. In the Under 15 Boys race there were good efforts from Simon Baker
44th in 21-01, Gavin Bettley 56th in 21-21 and Sam Grain 170th.
However the result of the day was in the Under 17 Men where Mark
Barham put in a strong performance to finish 17th in 25-46. He was followed
by James Mountford 50th in in 27-13 and Paul Wilson 75th in 28-17.
