Southern Womens League at Luton 7 Sept

Hastings AC ladies went into their final Southern Women's league match at Luton without seven top athletes, which made the day very much a fight against relegation. It was also the last match for team manager Roland Garrad who is stepping down after 15 years. The indomitable team spirit was matched on the day by dogged determination by every athlete to get the maximum points possible and their efforts were rewarded with a fine third place and, more importantly, 149 pts which has almost certainly guaranteed their place in Division 2 again next season. Many athletes found themselves doing their normal events plus one or more events that they had rarely, if ever, attempted before. Every point gained in this way was invaluable to the cause and it is to their credit that this effort has proved successful. The team had just four individual victories through Kelly Coombs in the junior shot with a new personal best of 8.81m, Kate Butters in the U17 300m hurdles 52.2s and Paula Coombs with seasons best throws in the shot, 8.96m and hammer 35.15m.
