Southern Womens League at Hastings
27 July 2002
This was very much a relegation dog fight with all the teams bar Portsmouth
lying in the relegation zone before this match. In a very close match Hastings
came out on top with 187pts followed by Portsmouth 179 1/2pts, Southampton 157pts,
Brighton 151 1/2pts and Highgate 136pts. This was enough to lift Hastings above
their closest rivals and they now have one more match to try and get clear of
relegation. Hastings covered all the events for the first time this season and
this gave them the edge in many events. The junior throwers led the way with
wins for Lara Whitaker in the javelin 22.76m and Kelly Coombs 21.89m. This pair
also gained second places in the shot, Kelly 8.71, Lara 7.05 and discus 19.79m
and 17.31m pb. The senior throwers were even better with wins for Kate Butters
in the shot 10.08m, Paula Coombs shot 8.78m and hammer 35.10m and Jean Wild
hammer 21.27m. Kate was also second in the javelin 27.46m and Paula second in
the discus 29.72m. Naomi Martin rounded off the throws with 15.00m in the discus
for third place. On the track there werepersonal bests for Sophie Fitzwarren
'B' 100m 14.7s, Cassie Hall 'A' 200m 28.6s and Claire Burnham 'B' 30.1s, Katy
Sumner 'A' 80m hurdles 13.7s and Hanna Tomlinson 'B' 14.9s and Francesca Gregory
winning the 'B' 200m 27.6s. in the field Cindy Pollington jumped a personal
best 1.42m to win the 'A' high jump and Katy Sumner jumped a personal best 9.52m
in the 'A' triple jump. Other winners on the track were Mieke Howell 'A' 400m
58.5s and Alison Collie 'B' 100m hurdles 18.9s and on the field Jean Sanderson

Perkins 3.51m Claire Burnham 3.51m and Abby Mawby 3.22m.
