ATHLETE
OF THE YEAR
PETE
EVANS |
This was to be the final year that Hastings Athletes had to suffer the outdated training conditions at the William Parker Stadium as the "Lottery money" had come through to bring the facility back up to 1990's standards.Unfortunately the Ladies team were relegated to Div 4 East of the Southern Womens League (due mainly to lack of numbers in some age groups, rather than any lack of effort) and were denied the opportunity to make their "all out" effort in the final match. (Cancelled due to the unfortunate death of Diana, Princess of Wales). The Senior men were back in division One of the Southern Mens League after a gap of 15 years, and managed to steer clear of the relegation zone (19th) (Div One is tough!) and the "B" team finishing finishing 15th in Div.5. Top athlete Sean Baldock also went on to wear his first England vest. To quote Jan Waite, manager of the young athletes 1997 saw the young athletes few in number but overflowing with spirit", and managing to finish in a similar position to the previous year. The Veterans teams still enjoyed success finishing second in the Ladies and third in the mens sussex Veterans League. The Club travelled to Oudenaarde in Belgium for an International Athletics match. Marion Jones (Soon to be an Olympic Superstar) opened the newly refurbished stadium and delighted many of our athletes with her friendliness and many autographs.
